A land of 17,000 islands, Indonesia is a nation impacted by fire--it is part of the "ring of fire", and has the largest number of active volcanoes in the world--and spice--Indonesia was colonized by the Dutch around 1595 in an effort to control the spice trade. In recent years, Indonesia has gained fame as a tourist destination, due in part to the reputation of Bali and other Indonesian islands as a tropical paradise. Indonesia's culture is also becoming better known on the world stage, especially its exports of handcrafted batik cloth and the musical stylings of the country's gamelan orchestras. And the flora and faun of Indonesia are a tremendous draw as well, from the lovable, endangered orangutans of Kalimantan (Borneo)and the fascinating Komodo dragons of Komodo Island, to the 30,000 species of flowers, including thousands of delicate orchids, found throughout the archipelago. Indonesia is truly a land of wonder, waiting to be discovered.
