England is a country rich in legend, culture, history, and natural beauty. From its bustling and diverse cities to its traditional villages that dot a landscape of rolling hills, England is a lively patchwork of ancient and modern influences that has for centuries played a central role in world politics and power. In Neolithic times, a rich and complex culture evolved here, as evidenced by monuments such as fabled Stonehenge. In the 10th century, it officially became a unified state and took its name from the Angles, one of a number of Germanic tribes who settled in the territory during the 5th and 6th centuries. The country is known for its long-established monarchy, its world-wide impact and reach during the expansion of the British Empire, and as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. It is the place of origin of both the English language and the Church of England, and English law forms the basis of the legal systems of many countries. Today, England remains among the world's most influential centers of cultural development, arts & sciences, politics, education, and commerce.
