Asia : Cambodia

Main Image

Cambodia has a complex heritage, warm and welcoming people, and an untamed wild landscape. Bordered by Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Gulf of Thailand, Cambodia is heavily forested, with the north and southwest of the country consisting of tropical forest and highlands, while the central basin is fertile land dissected by the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers.

Cambodia’s extensive temple ruins at Angkor epitomize the glory of the Khmer civilization; Angkor is one of the most spectacular historical sites in Asia. This incredible complex, which lay forgotten beneath the jungle for centuries, dates back to the twelfth century and represents one of the world's most remarkable architectural achievements. Built to honor the Hindu god Vishnu, it is the world's largest religious building and took some 50,000 artisans, workers and slaves, and nearly 40 years, to complete. Angkor's kings also devised a masterpiece of ancient engineering: a sophisticated irrigation system that includes barays (gigantic man-made lakes) and canals that ensured as many as three rice crops a year. Part of this system is still in use today.
